Six good reasons why IT-TRANS and Karlsruhe are a perfect match:
Karlsruhe is the central German hub for information technology and digitalisation
More than ten universities - from technology and economics to art and music – are based in Karlsruhe. But did you know that the region is also home to the first and largest computer science faculty in Germany? The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is a world-renowned research university, and one of thirteen "Universities of Excellence" in Germany. KIT not only offers degree programmes in industrial engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering, but also spearheads exciting mobility enterprises, including the TEMPUS urban bus platooning project. Karlsruhe is home to the FZI Research Centre for Information Technology, too. It’s renowned for its work on autonomous shuttles, as well as the Fraunhofer Institute for Security in Information Technology, which was honoured with the German Mobility Award in November 2023 for its MobileCityGame project.
The city is home to a unique network of technology, business and science
It is not for nothing that we speak of the Karlsruhe TechnologyRegion: the fan-shaped city is home to forward-thinking public authorities, industrial companies and transport operators committed to taking sustainable public mobility to the next level. One example of the region's innovative strength is the DAKIMO project, which aims to use AI to make intermodal journeys even more sustainable and seamless. Fraunhofer IOSB, INIT, INOVAPLAN, KIT and the KVV transport association are among those involved.
Karlsruhe plays a pioneering role in terms of mobility and sustainability
State Secretary Elke Zimmer recently called Karlsruhe a pioneer in the contemporary reorganisation of traffic areas, and this is particularly true of Karlsruhe city centre. In a ground-breaking urban development project, the city centre is subject to ongoing analysis with a focus on quality of life and is gradually being transformed in terms of parking, deliveries, car-free zones, cycling and pedestrian traffic. Part of the large-scale project will see the creation of an underground tramway and car tunnel that will ease tram and car traffic in the city centre, and thus create more space for pedestrians and cyclists.
Karlsruhe is the German capital of female empowerment!
Since 2022, Karlsruhe has been the place to be for women in the digital industry. That was the year that the Digital Female Leader Awards #dfla, initiated by Tijen Onaran's company Global Digital Women (GDW), took place in Karlsruhe for the first time. And so began the start of a cooperation between the City of Karlsruhe, Messe Karlsruhe and GDW. It’s a perfect match, with Karlsruhe home to the Federal Court of Justice and the Federal Constitutional Court, and also a bastion for women's rights and equal treatment. At IT-TRANS, our partner, the Women in Mobility network, gives women in public transport a voice for enhanced visibility and diversity in the industry.
As a UNESCO City of Media Arts, Karlsruhe has a lot to offer beyond public transport and mobility
In 2019, Karlsruhe became the first and only city in Germany to ever have been awarded the title of Creative City of Media Arts by UNESCO. Anyone strolling through Karlsruhe will not only encounter media art in the Centre for Art and Media ZKM, but also in public buildings, leisure and work spaces throughout the city. Karlsruhe combines historical buildings, a rich cultural landscape and a flourishing creative scene with technology, science and business – hence the connection to IT-TRANS.
There is so much more to discover before and after IT-TRANS!
No matter how exhausting trade fairs can be, an interesting city is always invigorating. So while in Karlsruhe, how about visiting the Centre for Art and Media ZKM? You can also discover the extensive historical collections in the Badisches Landesmuseum, or explore Alter Schlachthof, a vibrant new creative centre with a colourful mix of start-ups, crafts, coworking and cafés.
